INVITATION

Students’ Seminar

On

REVISITING ETHNICITY AND NATION-BUILDING IN SOUTH, CENTRAL, SOUTH-EAST ASIA & SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC

28th November 2006, Conference Room 203

10 AM till 4.30 PM

We invite submission of seminar papers that explore all aspects of ethnicity and nation-building from all disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.

The objective of the students’ seminar is to assemble researchers from the area studies of the CSCSEASWPS and to discuss some of the latest scholarship, and chart a future programme of understanding and analysis on issues in ethnicity and nation-building. We are also planning to publish all the articles in the seminar proceedings, which can be used as reference by researchers and students on the issue of ethnicity and nation-building in the region. Among the topics covered will be:

  • Theoretical perspectives of ethnicity and nation-building in the contemporary era,
  • The legacy of colonialism and its impacts upon politics of ethnicity and nation-building,
  • Government policies (economic, education, language, culture, law) which have helped or hindered multiethnic harmony,
  • Citizen’s rights in multiethnic societies,
  • Ethnonationalism and secessionist movements
  • Migration / Diaspora
  • The role of media and civil society
  • Gender perspective
  • Conflict Resolution

The organizers encourage the broadest interpretation of the topic, and the widest application to political phenomena.
